We're thrilled to share the news that Timo has joined zystem (creator of zymtrace).

Timo is a software engineer based in Zürich.

Before joining zystem, he worked at Google as a security engineer, detecting and responding to threats to Google’s systems, and as a software engineer on an eBPF-based endpoint security agent.

He has a background in IT Security, and once developed a static analysis-based framework for ECUs used in cars.

More about Timo

How did you get into software engineering?

My interest in software engineering began at an early age. While playing online games, I encountered cheaters, which sparked my curiosity about how those cheats worked.

This curiosity launched my journey into self-teaching software engineering, reverse engineering, and a variety of related technical skills. Over time, I gained substantial experience through personal projects and collaborations with incredible individuals who have inspired me over the years.

Through these experiences, I discovered my passion for solving complex, low-level systems problems.

Why zystem?

Debugging performance issues at scale has shown me the true complexity engineers face - from sifting through logs and metrics to pinpointing bottlenecks across distributed systems. This firsthand experience drove my interest in zystem's vision of reimagining performance optimization. I'm energized by the opportunity to build tools that transform this traditionally painful process into an intuitive experience, empowering engineers to quickly identify and resolve performance issues without getting bogged down in setup, code changes, etc. I want to help create the type of seamless debugging and optimization platform I wish I had during my most challenging optimization projects.

More importantly, the goal to optimise GPU-bound workloads is both technically intriguing and especially relevant given the significant investments in AI infrastructure today. Such insights can lead to substantial reductions in power consumption,  emissions, and cloud costs. Being at zystem gives me a chance to make a positive impact on sustainability.

Lastly, the team they’ve built so far includes incredible talent, and I’m thrilled at the opportunity to collaborate with such amazing people.

Where do you find #inspiration?

I enjoy going for runs to clear my mind and stay active. Music is another major outlet for me – I play piano and experiment with creating electronic music compositions, though I'm still learning the production process.
