We are delighted to welcome Igor to zystem. Igor is based in Dublin and brings over 10 years of experience in building distributed systems.

Prior to joining zystem, he worked at Cisco/AppDynamics, where he developed and optimized cloud metric collectors.

Earlier in his career, Igor was the tech lead at a startup building an online document translation platform for banks and other financial organizations. It was there that he gained much of his hands-on experience in high availability, performance, observability, and security across distributed systems.

More about Igor

How did you get into software engineering?

My journey into tech started when I was seven. I came across books about Norton Commander, VGA graphics programming, and Borland C++, even though I didn’t have a real computer. I made a long list of things I wanted to build. Predictably, it went out the window when I finally got my first Pentium 133 - I was playing games. While all the kids played video games, I somehow got into MUDs.

The first language I learned was C, which gave me an early appreciation for memory safety. During university, I got a task to get Linux running on embedded ARM. Inadvertently, it taught me a lot about OS internals, which was very helpful later, when I needed to make some money for living, moving into web development.

Why are you at zystem?

In my last two roles I spent a lot of time collecting, processing, storing, and analyzing metrics at scale before I realized that I enjoy solving infrastructure and performance-related problems more than anything else.

The team at zystem is some of the smartest and passionate engineers I've ever seen. It would have been a shame not to have them as colleagues.

Lastly, since Rust is my latest true love, I just couldn't help it.

If you weren't programming, what would you be doing?

If I weren’t in tech, I’d probably be working with CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines, fixing cars, or doing some kind of hands-on manufacturing. I’ve always loved precision, craftsmanship, and building things that are meant to last.

Where do you find #inspiration?

I find the most inspiration in building tools for myself, whether it’s yet another custom cron implementation, a self-hosted solution for a problem I didn’t know I had, or a sudden deep dive into embedded systems. Sometimes it's 3D printing car parts, or spending half a day chasing seconds in Richard Burns Rally. And when it’s none of the above, I might be out mountain biking or just reading a good book.

If you liked that, you'll love these
